Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, even in social situations. Everyone has experienced loneliness, however, it can sometimes become consuming. These feelings are often over whelming, depressing, and frustrating. Not only is loneliness a public health concern, it is a global human phenomenon. Humans are social beings. We require healthy social relationships to thrive mentally and even physically. Knowing that is knowing that loneliness can cause a lot of strain on a person in multiple ways.
So how does loneliness effect a person?
Individually, loneliness can cause:
- depressive symptoms
- risk of loss of cognition in old age
- increased alcohol consumption
- suicidal ideation
- poor sleep quality
Although loneliness is concerning, there are ways to reduce and manage loneliness. Each person is different so it is best to identify what works best for you.
Some ideas to reduce loneliness include:
- join support groups
- utilize talk therapies
- participate in peer support
Everyone experiences loneliness from time to time, but it’s important to be aware of when it is starting to become too much.
