Cultural and Clinical Competence in Work with Transgender Clients
This workshop will explore the diverse dynamics of working with transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) clients. Emphasis will be placed on cultural and clinical considerations that go beyond how to create a comfortable space. Using case examples, the workshop will identify common obstacles faced by TGNC clients as they navigate family, social, legal and political challenges. Topics will include review of statistical data about TGNC discrimination; use of culturally sensitive language and clinical interventions; and review of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
Recognize culturally sensitive language when working with TGNC clients
Increase knowledge of obstacles & challenges faced by TGNC individuals
Understand clinical considerations for working with TGNC clients
Understand and utilize the World Professional Association for Transgender Health: Standards of Care (version 7)
Access and share information on resources with TGNC clients
